Maintaining Motivation Throughout the School Year

Most students are enthusiastic about returning to school after the long summer vacation.  It is exhilarating to start afresh, to catch up with friends, and to meet new classmates.  Social connections are important.  Enthusiasm for scholastic achievement runs high after the long summer vacation too.

After having enjoyed a few months of free time, the return to the schedule, structure, and demands of school presents a significant challenge.  The student needs to become re-accustomed to effective study habits and learning strategies.  Readiness to focus on study boosts the student’s self-confidence and motivation to learn.

Many teachers provide a review of foundational prior knowledge before introducing new material.  Students need to pay close attention to reviews, to ask questions they may have before the class moves on.  Understanding the basics is the starting point of progress, encouraging the student to learn more.  The student should be doing their homework conscientiously to reinforce the day’s lessons.

Some students falter after the first few weeks of school, becoming more and more lost as more new material is presented.  Their minds wander and they begin to dread going to class.  It is important to explore reasons for this, to help the student get back on track as early as possible.
