Praise the Persistence! Applaud the Ambition!

Most students sincerely want to keep up with their class, yet the willingness to put in the daily study effort is not easy to maintain. When parents take positive notice of the student’s applying himself to study, motivation is reinforced.

For ‘giving it a good try’ a student deserves praise. Ask how the homework is going if they appear stuck.  Sometimes advice is needed before they become frustrated. Suggesting that they read the directions once again, or that they go back to see if there is a similar problem in their text book with a thorough explanation, might lead to a solution. Your interest in their progress adds to their motivation.

When homework is corrected in class, your student should be taking notes, asking questions if necessary. It is important that correct information and proper methods are understood so that your student does not develop a ‘wrong’ pattern.  New class material will build upon your student’s background knowledge so the earlier that mistakes are identified and corrected, the better.

Knowing the proper ‘how’ increases the student’s confidence. Knowing that they can learn from their mistakes increases the student’s motivation to try, try again, try a different way, then ask in class.

If there is doubt that your student has sufficient background knowledge, seek clarification, correction rather than persist in what one is already doing. Persistence in the WRONG way to do something reinforces the errors.  Encourage your student to ask questions and get help before developing wrong patterns.

In many school districts parents can track their student's progress online as the semester progresses.

If your student is applying themselves to learning yet they are not achieving as they should be, one-to-one tutoring may be the answer.

Maximizing the potential of each individual student is the mission of Lear Educational Center.

• At Lear Educational Center we assess and reinforce foundational knowledge, filling in any portions of a curriculum that the student might have missed or might have misunderstood. New material is presented step-by-step with the student demonstrating his understanding of the new material, having his questions answered and his new knowledge reviewed.  Mastery is achieved before progressing to the next step.

• At Lear Educational Center we interface with our students’ schools, working with the curriculum appropriate for each student. We specialize in teaching students with learning differences, helping them further develop and expand upon their individual strengths, as well as to meet IEP and remediation goals.

• At Lear Educational Center we provide one-to-one, individualized Academic Coaching and Scholastic Tutoring on all levels, primary through college, for most subjects and for most standardized tests.  Study strategies, learning and executive function skills also are taught so that our students can best meet the classroom challenges of today as well as those of tomorrow.
