SAT and ACT Prep for the Student with Learning Differences

Students with learning differences need strong and appropriate skills and strategies in addition to sound foundational knowledge to score well on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and American College Testing (ACT) exams.  While not all colleges require these pre-admission tests, all colleges do consider the scores, making test results a key component in the evaluation of the student’s application.  Performing well in these standardized tests is especially important for the student with a lower grade point average who seeks college admission.

There are many aspects of the SAT and ACT testing which can pose a heightened challenge for the student, often leading to anxiety, difficulty with retrieval of knowledge from memory, confusion, and inability to focus.

     • the significance of the exam

     • the format of the questions

     • the need to write short essay responses

     • the extensive scope of the knowledge included

     • the need to switch focus from subject to subject

     • the time limits per section

     • the lengthy duration of the overall testing

     • the unfamiliar surroundings

     • the general anxiety level in the room

At Lear Educational Center, we teach and reinforce strategies and techniques to enhance student learning and test taking skills.  We specialize in teaching students with learning differences.  Our systematized, intensive, individualized instruction is directed toward filling in gaps in the student’s learning, advancing the student’s knowledge as well as comprehensively reviewing the academic material included in the standardized tests.

We help our students develop proficiency in reading, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, writing, math, study skills, and test-taking strategies.  In addition, the student gains a working knowledge of the format and typical content of the specific standardized test as we work with practice tests.  This reduces the anxiety related to the examination.

At Lear Educational Center we provide one-to-one academic tutoring on all levels, primary through college, for most subjects and for most standardized tests.  We interface with schools, working with the curriculum appropriate for each student. We accommodate and compensate for learning differences, helping students meet IEP and remediation goals.  Our students learn foundational skills and strategies so that they can better understand their current coursework and meet the challenges of tomorrow.

If your student has an IEP or 504 plan in place, he may be eligible for appropriate accommodations during SAT and ACT tests as well.  Requests for accommodations need to be made early and documentation from the school district regarding IEP or 504 accommodations is required.
